The way Abed said ‘don’t cry’ to Annie. So compassionate and empathizing this friendship gives me life.
I was so happy for a natural push and pull between them! I am grossed out at Harmon for a lot of things he did this season, but having Abed and Annie really not know if Abed cared about anyone (like her) during the polygraph episode, and revealing he stalked her online, ranks at the top.
Abed has a girlfriend, but that doesn’t mean he has no place for Annie, anymore than he didn’t have a place for her when there was Troy as his best friend. But ever since the polygraph, I think Annie has been truly wondering if Abed would move out when she became a ‘boring subject.’ Annie caving to Abed’s demands for dinner in the VCR game episode struck me as Annie had resorted to pleasing/submission, but thankfully the episode had Annie snap and fight back and address issues with Abed. They even fell into finishing each other’s thoughts with putting up a Craigslist ad. But it still wasn’t enough.
This episode, however, gave hints of why this friendship rang so interesting when it started in season one. Even when they were clashing (they go overboard manipulative and ‘geeky’ in different ways), their relationship’s themes were still present, most loudly: because you said we were friends and you’ll never be alone.
