#we always talk about how fascinated Elijah is by Elena #but she watches him like he a walking living black hole #something unimaginably powerful and ancient and yet contained in this one - somewhat playful - body #she doesn’t get yet why they have such a strong connection #he gets it and he spells it out for us and himself - he knows love has many forms #she’s still young and thinks love is always the be all and end all #she doesn’t know it can just be two bodies colliding #and seeing each other for what they are #so she looks at him not like prey watching a predator #but like prey learning she is on the same level as the predator after all #and is somewhat in awe of the fact that the predator knows and respects this already #without her having to do anything at all but be herself

  1. The song Do What You Have To Do by Sarah McLachlan. They literally lie awake and roll around, and sulk, and cringe at the idea of not having these small (huge) things of understanding and respect from each other, they want it so (bizarrely, possessively) badly! I need to hurry up figuring out gifs and vids and post my elejah fanmixes.
  2. Red Riding Hood, where Red is her own huntsman and guts the wolf herself to protect and rescue Stefan and Damon her grandma. Because Elijah is the scary, terrible, cruel, and unromantic wolf, he’s planning to kill Stefan and Damon (“the deal is off”) and plans to kill her (he didn’t tell her, she figured it out herself)! And why should she trust him (even though she does, and wants to (“give me you word!”), even though they’re ridiculously honest for all the secrets they have)? It’s in a wolf’s nature to devour, it’s in an Original’s nature to devour a doppleganger’s red, red blood for their own ends. She heard it from Katherine, saw the terror in her eyes and knew for once she wasn’t lying. So no, Elijah, you terrorize Elena, prepare for your weapon against your brother to turn itself on you and tell you to screw yourself! And then it happens again in 3.14; whether he’s conscious or not, it doesn’t matter that this is also about him adjusting his relationship with Elena to an actual friendship, he is insufferably using Elena against his powerful, homicidal mother. So drink your champagne, sir, which Elena knows (and you don’t) is filled with the blood that once created you and you once helped your brother nearly obtain, and smile at Red Elena after that blood fills your mouth and slides down your throat. You’re a wolf and I don’t forget it and she killed you again, she even drank her own blood to keep up the pretense. But then she stopped it, she saved you. Because you’re her wolf and no one kills the wolf but the huntsman; you’re Elena’s to kill only, because she lurvesss you you’re a function of her identity. It drives her crazy, the idea of losing you; you’re her tool in her story always and forever, and she’ll throw her huntsman’s already shady heroism out the window to keep you. And Wolf’s got Red right back mhmmm, to the point he’ll risk throwing his own under the bus too in 3.22; Elijah isn’t using to admiring people anymore and I just… I love that these two people set up as certain functions (the wolf who devours, the girl who needs to be saved from devouring) maneuver, and respect and admire each other for what they do with what they’re given no matter how many times their functions inevitably clash again.
  3. Word games. Riddles. See why also the word ‘negotiation’ has been ruined for me forever. Seriously it’s all in the subtext and underneath and sneakiness with this otp. I think Elena actually is the only one to pick up on right away exactly what Elijah says and, therefore, what he is not saying (alas, poor Trevor, you dumb post! :c), and Elijah actually has to try with someone who can serve that bs right back. Not because she isn’t afraid (she is, because she isn’t stupid; also Elena is actually afraid and sad and depressed and PTSD all the time, poor baby), but she’s got something to fight for that trumps fear. It happens to be the same thing he’s fighting for. Elena, the human and the doppleganger and the madonna (of Julie’s forever stupid Elena/Katherine madonna-whore complex for Salvatores ugh ugh ugh), is relating and cracking the almost political word games of Elijah, the vampire and Original and murdering psychopath! And it unnerves the hell out of Stefan and Damon and Caroline and Bonnie, but Elena never stops.
